Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Target 4.7
“By 2030, ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including, among others, through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development”.
Abstract: The Global Education Monitoring (GEM) team commissioned the IBE to monitor SDG 4.7, as background information to assist in drafting the 2016 GEM report. This study is an initial attempt to monitor Target 4.7 content in curricula globally. For this purpose, a coding scheme was developed based on key knowledge, skills, behaviours, and pedagogies related to SDG 4.7. The coding scheme was translated into French and Spanish, and applied to reveal to what extent SDG 4.7 content is present in National Curriculum Frameworks (NCFs) and Education Sector Plans (ESPs). In total, 108 NCFs and ESPs were evaluated from 78 countries for general basic education (primary and lower secondary). The main findings of the report provide a clear picture of the prevalence of Target 4.7 content and themes in formal education, and reveal some regional trends. Findings further highlight pre-existing values and content related to Target 4.7 that could be strengthened. Finally, the paper concludes with a set of recommendations that focus on ways for moving forward in monitoring SDG 4.7 effectively, both at curricular level and beyond.
